about

Emile's Telegraphic Transmission Device is the eponymous debut album from British synthpop band Emile's Telegraphic Transmission Device. Released on 19th of October 2012, it helped put the musical compositions of founder Daniel Ian Williams' on the map; having been scouted by the BBC in England.

The album is an experimental collection of both pop songs and soundscapes. Upon it's original recording session, Doodlebug was set to be the lead single. This single was replaced shortly after the album's release by Radio; having been scouted and played on BBC Radio Newcastle and BBC Radio Tees during their BBC Introducing slot. Upon the news of this, Dan had decided he had made a mistake in releasing Doodlebug first. The album moves around the theme of communication and is inspired by the use of Morse code.

During recording sessions, Dan was unsure about a name for the band and had decided he wanted something different and unique. He wanted something that would stand out from other acts; so he took inspiration from Coldplay's X&Y album sleeve. The sleeve was a visual representation of what is known as the Baudot code. After scouring images of Emile's telegraph systems, he had settled on the image used on the album's sleeve as it perfectly depicted both the band's name sake and the sound of the band at the time. "It looked very much like an early synthesiser. What a brilliant visual metaphor to use for the first album" said Dan in an early interview for Narc magazine. "He has a keyboard, we have a keyboard. He used Morse code, we used Morse code on the record."

The album also carries other early songs such as Derwent Tower and Concrete Heart, which dated back many years before. "I wrote, recorded, mixed, mastered and released the whole album within the space of three months" said Dan. "I just had ideas flow to me and I committed everything to tape as soon as it entered my head and left my fingers and mouth."

The album has faithfully been remastered from the original seven and a half inch per second three reel analogue master tape by Dan during the early months of 2022. They are now as loud as ever and jump right out compared to the original master from 2012.
